Ovulation and Conception

  • Fertilization usually occurs within the fallopian tube as the ovum is traveling toward the uterine cavity. If fertilization occurs, implantation occurs in about 7 days.
  • The corpus luteum is a specialized area in the ovary which produces progesterone to support the early part of pregnancy; it forms at the development site of the recently released ovum.
  • If the fallopian tube is scarred or blocked, as by pelvic inflammatory disease or structural deformity, ectopic pregnancy can result with likely tubal rupture, a potentially fatal condition for the mother.
