Fetal Development 1

  • The first trimester is the time of development when the tissues specialize into specific organs. At the end of 12 weeks, all of the organs are present, albeit immature.
  • Damage during the earliest weeks of gestation tends to be from infection or toxic exposure. Most of the time, this results in death and loss of the fetus.
  • It is occasionally possible to date a damaging event. If, for example, there are heart, nervous system and limb deformations, it is likely that an insult occurred at around week 5.
  • Fetuses delivered during the first trimester cannot survive.
